Minors in Petroleum Engineering

Petroleum Engineering

Energy Resources Engineering Minor

Course Requirements

15 credit hours; Choose 4 out of the following 5 courses described below:

  • PETR 5342 — CARCON CAPTURE UTILIZATION AND SEQUESTRATION
Methane and carbon dioxide (CO2) capture from industrial and agricultural sources and from the air, CO2 utilization for enhanced oil recovery, and CO2 storage in depleted reservoirs and saline aquifers.
  • PETR 5343 — CO2 EOR AND SEQUESTRATION
The course covers CO2 injection in mature oilfields as a proven method for Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) and presents its extension for sequestering anthropogenic CO2 captured from industrial processes.
  • PETR 5344 — SUBSURFACE ENERGY STORAGE
This course addresses subsurface storage of natural gas, hydrogen, compressed air, and heat and its integration with surface energy processes.
  • PETR 5346 — ENERGY TRANSITION
Describes and quantifies abundance, production, and use of various energy sources and evaluates whether estimated reduction in environmental and social impacts can offset costs for new energy sources or technologies
  • PETR 5348 — GEOTHERMAL RESOURCE ENGINEERING
Geothermal energy classification, current global utilization, liquid- and vapor-dominated systems. Fluid and heat flow fundamentals. Geothermal well drilling. Hot rock systems, global deep drilling experience, limitations, future prospects.

Petroleum Engineering Minor

There are 17 credit hours for the completion of the minor in Petroleum Engineering.

Engineering students must complete PETR 1111, PETR 2311, PETR 2111, PETR 2313 and any three of the following:  PETR 3362, PETR 3318, PETR 3315, or PETR 3372. All prerequisites and/or co-requisites must be observed for enrollment in petroleum classes and will be enforced.

UH Undergraduate Catalog

Eligibility and Criteria to Declare Minor from the Petroleum Engineering Department in Energy Resources Engineering or Petroleum Engineering

  • Students are required to be admitted to the UH College of Engineering to be eligible for approval to add a minor
  • An engineering GPA at UH must be a minimum of 3.0 to apply.
  • Junior  academic standing in an engineering discipline.
  • Been admitted into the minor prior to completion of the final 9 credits of Minor coursework.
  • The minor in petroleum engineering or energy resources engineering requires a general petition completed and approved by the student’s current engineering major advisor and the petroleum engineering advisor.
  • Next, the general petition is submitted by the petroleum engineering department to the engineering dean’s office by the deadlines below. Following the dean’s approval, a contract agreement with the petroleum engineering advisor will be completed.
  • Students must earn a 2.0 minimum cumulative grade point average on all courses attempted in the minor discipline at UH. No course may count toward the minor in which a grade of less than C- is earned.

General Petition Deadlines

  • Fall Approval – July 1
  • Spring Approval – November 1
